Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced a market during the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were living in the local area quite likely from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a substantially wider area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
