Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were staying in the region quite likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't listed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a far bigger area than merely the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't applied before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the following generations and the building of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has seen greater development in recent years.
