Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it can be found near to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage found near by offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't discussed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a considerably larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not inserted prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen greater development in the past several years.
