Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were residing in the region most probably since the 6th Century. The village as such is not discussed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way greater area than only the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put in before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the following years and the construction of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand.
