Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled upon near by give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the local area more than likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was is not documented till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a substantially bigger area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
