Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins found nearby show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the tenth century, and relics uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the region possibly from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time is not described till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a far larger area than simply the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put in until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
