Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman times, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found near the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage found in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered indicate that they were residing in the locale most likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then was not observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a much greater area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put in till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed greater development in current times.
