Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the local area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a far larger area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few years.
