Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the area more than likely from the sixth century. The village as it was isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a way wider area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
