Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the era of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage found in close proximity show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were settling the locale in all probability since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time isn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a far greater area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
