Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins discovered nearby show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered show that they were settling the local area more than likely since the sixth century. The village as such wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a significantly larger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't included up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following decades and the construction of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
