Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't described until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a far bigger area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name could have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen improved development in the past several years.
