Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered imply that they were dwelling in the area most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not listed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a far larger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be put in till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the ensuing years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that's witnessed improved development in current times.
