Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins picked up in the area give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were staying in the region perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time isn't listed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a lot greater area than just the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not appended before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen increased development in the past few decades.
