Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins stumbled on nearby show proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as such is not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a significantly wider area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the coming generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that has seen greater development in the recent past.
