Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered denote that they were inhabiting the vicinity possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not observed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a lot greater area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the coming years and the building of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed improved development in current times.
