Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins unearthed in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The village existing at this time wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a much larger area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may possibly have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the ensuing generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
