Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were living in the local area quite possibly since the sixth century. The village as such was not referred to until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably wider area than just the town itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get included until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
