Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts found denote that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The commune as it was was not observed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a way wider area than merely the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that's witnessed increased development in the last few years.
