The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the local area more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a lot bigger area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put in until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
