The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were residing in the area most probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was was not mentioned until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a far wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
