Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage found in the area show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as such wasn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a much wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name could possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put in till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen improved development in modern times.
