Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created a market during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were settling the region most probably since the sixth century. The commune existing then was not documented till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a considerably larger area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may likely have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be included before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
