Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the locale quite likely from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot larger area than simply the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the following generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve.
