Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins found in the area offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were staying in the local area in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't discussed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a far larger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming generations and the building of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's seen accelerated development in the last few years.
