Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays near the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage stumbled upon near by offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered mean that they were staying in the region quite possibly since the sixth century. The village existing at that time wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot wider area than only the town alone, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has seen increased development in recent times.
