Located in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past extending back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed mean that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't listed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a much wider area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could perhaps have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen improved development in the last few years.
