Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins discovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the region more than likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far larger area compared to the town by itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
