Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a past extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins discovered in the area offer proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities found suggest that they were inhabiting the region more than likely since the 6th Century. The village as such isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a substantially bigger area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the ensuing generations and the building of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
