Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to the Roman era, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins stumbled on nearby show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon indicate that they were settling the local area most likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time is not mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a lot greater area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get added on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
