Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage found in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were staying in the vicinity almost certainly since the sixth century. The village existing then was not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a significantly larger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get inserted prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the coming years and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen greater development in current times.
