Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a story going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the region undoubtedly from the sixth century. The commune as such is not described until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a considerably larger area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name could quite possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the coming years and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
