Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story extending back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins unearthed nearby show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were residing in the neighbourhood most probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a far larger area than merely the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
