Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands next to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage uncovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed mean that they were inhabiting the locale most likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not discussed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a lot larger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town which has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
