Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage discovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not described till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a much wider area compared to the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town which has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
