Situated within the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were inhabiting the area perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a significantly wider area compared to the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put in up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the succeeding decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
