Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled upon nearby offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were residing in the vicinity very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far bigger area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the ensuing years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed greater development in current times.
