Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is situated near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were settling the local area in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not observed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a much larger area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may very well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get applied until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the ensuing years and the development of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed improved development in recent times.
