Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman days, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up nearby give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were residing in the neighbourhood most probably since the sixth century. The village as it was isn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a substantially larger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the succeeding decades and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town which has seen accelerated development in the past few decades.
