Located in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were living in the vicinity in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time was not discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a way wider area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be included till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the following decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen accelerated development in modern times.
