Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins uncovered in the area give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed a market in about the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were staying in the area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way greater area than simply the town alone, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be included until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
