Located in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage found nearby show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were inhabiting the local area probably from the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly wider area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put in till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
