Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far wider area than only the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the following years and the building of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
