Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts picked up show that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a lot greater area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has seen increased development in the past several years.
