Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market in around the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were settling the vicinity quite likely from the sixth century. The village as such wasn't listed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a far wider area than merely the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put in up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that has seen improved development in the past few decades.
