Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage found in close proximity show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who introduced a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were residing in the local area possibly from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a way larger area than merely the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get put on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that has witnessed increased development in recent years.
