Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed indicate that they were settling the vicinity quite likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a lot wider area than merely the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put in prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
