Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled on in the area offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered denote that they were staying in the neighbourhood perhaps from the sixth century. The commune as such isn't documented till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a far bigger area than just the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not applied until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
