Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage picked up near by give proof of this. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were settling the neighbourhood most probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not observed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a significantly wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be included prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has seen accelerated development in modern times.
