The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a considerably bigger area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
