The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the region most likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a way wider area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could possibly have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put in until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town which has witnessed improved development in current times.
