Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were staying in the locale very likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not reported till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a lot bigger area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen increased development in recent times.
