Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up in the area show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found denote that they were dwelling in the region quite likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not mentioned till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a lot larger area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't appended till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop.
