Found in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage uncovered near by show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood possibly from the sixth century. The village as such isn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a way wider area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the coming generations and the development of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
