Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it sits near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were staying in the region quite likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a significantly greater area than merely the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't inserted until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
