Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historical past going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage picked up nearby give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up denote that they were living in the area quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a substantially wider area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
