Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands next to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were residing in the local area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune as it was was not described till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a lot bigger area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the succeeding decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
