Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the vicinity most likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a far larger area than simply the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be added up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop.
