Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins discovered nearby give proof of this. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The village existing at that time wasn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a much larger area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be added prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the coming years and the development of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that has seen greater development in current times.
