Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early relics and coins unearthed near by show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were dwelling in the region most probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a substantially wider area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be applied until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the ensuing years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that has seen improved development in current times.
