Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts picked up reveal that they were dwelling in the region possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not cited till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a way greater area compared to the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the following generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
