Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around 37,000 and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins discovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed imply that they were living in the locale perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time isn't documented till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a far larger area than just the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be included before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has seen greater development in the past few years.
