Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the era of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins discovered in the area offer proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were settling the region very likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time is not observed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a lot bigger area than just the town itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be inserted up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the ensuing years and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed improved development in modern times.
