The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were dwelling in the region very likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not referred to till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a much bigger area than merely the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the following years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
