Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands near the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins found nearby give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a considerably larger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's witnessed improved development in the last few years.
