Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were living in the local area very likely since the sixth century. The village as it was wasn't reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way wider area compared to the town alone, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the succeeding decades and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town which has witnessed greater development in modern times.
