Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area offer proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled on mean that they were residing in the region undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a much greater area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
