Situated in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage stumbled on in close proximity show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were dwelling in the area possibly since the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a lot larger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get added up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
