The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a significantly greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
