Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins unearthed nearby show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were settling the local area more than likely since the sixth century. The village as such was not observed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a far bigger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming years and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that has seen increased development in the last few years.
