Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who developed the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were staying in the locale probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a much wider area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get appended before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the following decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has witnessed increased development in recent years.
