Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage found in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered denote that they were settling the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a much wider area than merely the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be inserted up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
