Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a history stretching back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed close to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage found near by show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were dwelling in the vicinity perhaps from the 6th Century. The village existing then was not cited till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has seen increased development in recent years.
