Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman times, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage discovered in the area give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were living in the vicinity very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a considerably bigger area compared to the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
