Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins discovered in the area give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the neighbourhood most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't listed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a far wider area than just the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't appended till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the ensuing years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
