Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage discovered near by give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were settling the locale most likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't described until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a far wider area compared to the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put in prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
