Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins found in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who developed the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon mean that they were inhabiting the area probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a much bigger area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not put on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen greater development in the past few years.
