Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon nearby show proof of this. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place in around the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed reveal that they were residing in the area quite possibly since the sixth century. The village as it was was not reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a substantially bigger area than just the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't appended till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
