Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins unearthed near by offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially greater area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may likely have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be inserted till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
