Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the vicinity possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a lot bigger area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that has seen increased development in modern times.
