Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it stands near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the local area probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a substantially greater area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the ensuing years and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
