Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage discovered in the area offer evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were settling the vicinity in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not listed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a substantially bigger area than only the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has seen greater development in recent times.
