Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and relics found mean that they were settling the area in all probability since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time wasn't listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a substantially bigger area compared to the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put in up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the ensuing generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen improved development in current times.
