Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins stumbled upon nearby offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the local area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way larger area than merely the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be appended before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that has seen accelerated development in current times.
