Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins unearthed near by give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood very likely since the sixth century. The commune as such is not described until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far larger area than just the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not inserted before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the following years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand.
