Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins uncovered nearby offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the region most likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not described until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a much greater area than merely the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town which has seen greater development in the recent past.
