Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past going back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins discovered near by give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were staying in the area undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a way greater area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
