Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it lies near the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage picked up nearby offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were staying in the local area probably since the sixth century. The village existing then was not referred to until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a considerably wider area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the following generations and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
