Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were settling the area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't referred to until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a considerably larger area compared to the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
