Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coins stumbled upon nearby show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were residing in the area perhaps from the sixth century. The commune existing then is not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a lot larger area than simply the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may possibly have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
