Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Set in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins unearthed in the area give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered reveal that they were residing in the locale most likely from the sixth century. The commune as such is not documented till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a significantly bigger area than simply the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get inserted up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
