Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins found nearby give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up indicate that they were settling the neighbourhood very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as such was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a lot greater area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may likely have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get inserted till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town which has witnessed increased development in modern times.
