The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a significantly bigger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be put on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
