Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage found in the area give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and relics picked up indicate that they were settling the region quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a substantially greater area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town which has seen greater development in recent times.
