Situated within the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins stumbled upon nearby offer proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the sixth century. The commune existing then was not discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a significantly bigger area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get put in till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
