Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage found in the area show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were staying in the local area most likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly greater area than only the town alone, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name could very well have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
