Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity give proof of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were residing in the vicinity perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't listed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a way greater area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
