Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the locale probably from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a far wider area compared to the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be applied until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen greater development in the recent past.
