Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins uncovered near by show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the tenth century, and relics found show that they were inhabiting the area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then was not mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a lot bigger area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand.
