Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were staying in the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't documented until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a far bigger area than merely the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't inserted until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the following decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
