Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage picked up in the area show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were settling the locale undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune existing then is not documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially greater area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
